With Rave Rats, Furtive crafts a topsy-turvy ode to underground urchins. This release is a celebration of the relentless vermin invading warehouses and scampering through basements to build new homes, a salute to the rambunctious rodents pilfering from your pantries and making weird noises in your walls at ridiculous hours. These seven tracks of crooked technoid grooves are sure to get all the freaks gyrating.
The album opens with the stretchy, awkward synth flexions of Club Rat I & II, a skewed soundtrack for the variously amusing and befuddled dancefloor moments when the club walls start warping, your shoes start slipping, and slinking miscreants and cock-eyed club-creepers start melting in and out of the foggy fracas. It’s the sheepish and giddy acknowledgement that you’ve gotten yourself into something silly. Club Rat II leans into the electrified tension of pre-dawn dancefloors - it’s a harder, grittier track to keep sweaty bodies swaying, when whatever come-up awkwardness has been shaken off in the club’s mayhem.
A straight-forward spanker, Acid Rat is a vulcanized workout for wound-up palindromic failure-boxes - a rubbery rave weapon for when you’re wriggling harder than a poisoned rat.
Plague Rat takes a more somber approach, with a skulking, sinewy low-end groove laced with brooding, sardonic atmospheres. Space Rat picks up where Plague Rat sputters out, layering in clattering percussion and dizzy pads over the orbital rhythm. These two oddly-perky, off-kilter tracks speak to rats as evolutionary survivors, steadfastly scurrying through inhospitable environments. When facing poisons, traps, illness, cops, pandemic, licensing authorities, climate change, hangovers, gentrification, gender, or the vacuum of space - (rave) rats will find a way!
Lab Rat I & II are quirky electroid explorations, with fast-paced, kinky electro drums slung under scientific synth zips and centrifugal acid. When the blotter peaks and you feel like you’re zooming in a zoo, remember that you’re the one conducting experiments inside your own skull. You’re the lab rat, dude... didn’t you consult about yer research protocols and experimental methodology?
Rave Rats is a tongue-in-cheek ode to the people building precious underground communities, carving out (sometimes literal) hole-in-the-wall access to vital shared spaces and experiences. Metaphorically, the “rave rats” are the tenacious techno lifers, the ultimate survivalists who will keep building their little club-like rave nests despite the odds. They’re the underground’s subversion of the mainstream. They’re the new friends and warm intentions that flit by in the dark. They’re the embodiment of a machine-funk-punk ethos that undergirds the values of the rave.
